Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.
I am looking around my office at the books on my shelf. There is one about President Kennedy by Richard Reeves. I really liked that book. There is another one about Joe Paterno, called No Ordinary Joe. Whether or not you think he should retire, he is an amazing man. Lectures to My Students by Spurgeon is like a deep well that you can keep going back to for fresh water. And currently I am reading Mentor Leadership by Tony Dungy. Those are four among hundreds of commentaries, books on theology, leadership, history, spiritual life, etc. that I have in my office at home and at church. But there is one book lying here on my desk that is no ordinary book.
God’s inspired Word is his love letter to us, revealing everything we need to know about him and about ourselves. The reading of it must be a part of our daily schedule. Its words should always be fresh in our mouths, coming out in our conversation. We should contemplate its message all the time. It is not simply a good read. The Bible is God-breathed.
I got an email the other day that described life’s “operating manual” as the B.I.B.L.E. (Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth). God was clear in his words to Joshua that we must “be careful to do everything written in it.” It is our instruction manual that addresses every area of our life. Following the instruction of God’s Word will lead us to his success.
Father, thank you for your word. Forgive us for taking it for granted. Forgive us for not spending enough time reading it. Help us develop the foundational spiritual habit of reading it every day so that we can know and follow your instruction, and so that we can enjoy your success. In Jesus Name. Amen.
