Psalm 62:7-12
My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. Surely the lowborn are but a breath, the highborn are but a lie. If weighed on a balance, they are nothing; together they are only a breath. Do not trust in extortion or put vain hope in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them. One thing God has spoken, two things I have heard: “Power belongs to you, God, and with you, Lord, is unfailing love”; and, “You reward everyone according to what they have done.”
When I was in seminary I had a pastor who became my mentor. He was a great leader, preacher, and husband/father. I thought the world of this man who took the time to mentor me. My third year of seminary, he moved to a larger church in another state. Then I heard the all-too-familiar story. He had an affair and left his family. My former mentor is no longer in ministry.
We all have our stories of people who have disappointed us. Maybe, for you, it was a family member, spouse, or a close friend. We learn the hard way that humans are human after all. We cannot depend on a person to give what only God can provide. David warns us not to set our hearts on anyone or anything other than God.
God is the “rock,” “salvation,” and “fortress.” Power belongs to Him alone. His love never fails us. We can pour out our hearts to Him and He hears. We can lay our requests before Him and He acts. We can trust Him at all times. He alone is our unshakeable refuge.
Father, help me to never seek from people or things what I can only find in You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
