Acts 1:8

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

Today’s passage is a powerful promise followed by a command that Jesus shared with his followers just before he ascended into heaven. This verse contains three important parts.

The Promise: Power through the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit lives in each believer and will always provide us with the strength we need to do whatever he calls us to do. He encourages and empowers!

The Command: You will be my witnesses

Jesus said that our assignment is to tell others about him. Empowered by the Spirit, we are to share the message of Jesus.

The Scope: Your world and the world

“Jerusalem” describes your immediate area. This includes your home, neighborhood, and community. “Judea and Samaria” broadens your scope of influence. This includes the city in which you live and the place where you work and interact with people. The “ends of the earth” describe the world. We are responsible to take the transforming message of Jesus to our world and the world at large.

So, it’s time to get up and get dressed with power and passion. You know what you need to do…what you must do. What are you waiting for?

Talking to God

Father, give us the courage to not only hear your Word but actually get up, get out, and get moving. For Jesus’ sake, Amen.
