Note to Self: Praise God Today!

Psalm 104:10-18
He makes springs pour water into the ravines; it flows between the mountains. They give water to all the beasts of the field; the wild donkeys quench their thirst. The birds of the sky nest by the waters; they sing among the branches. He waters the mountains from his upper chambers; the land is satisfied by the fruit of his work. He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for people to cultivate—bringing forth food from the earth: wine that gladdens human hearts, oil to make their faces shine, and bread that sustains their hearts. The trees of the LORD are well watered, the cedars of Lebanon that he planted. There the birds make their nests; the stork has its home in the junipers. The high mountains belong to the wild goats; the crags are a refuge for the hyrax.

This psalm begins with the self-exhortation: “Praise the LORD, my soul.” It is a note to self—get your focus off yourself and on God! If you are searching for praiseworthy things, this portion of the psalm takes you back to the basics.

Water. This colorless, transparent, odorless, tasteless liquid is the basis of the fluids of living organisms. Water is essential. Assuming that you are in fairly good shape, you could only live four to six days without this essential compound made up of two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen. This liquid, that many of us take for granted, comes from the hand of our gracious God.

If you are having trouble praising God, start with water. Thank God that He sees fit to provide you with all the water you need. Thank Him for the rain, the rivers, and the oceans. Thank Him that the “land is satisfied by the fruit of his work.” He loves us so much that He takes care of the essentials. And…He can take care of everything else in our lives as well.

Father, thank You for quenching my thirst with water and thank You for quenching my thirsty soul with Your presence. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
