Psalm 119:33-40
ה He
Teach me, LORD, the way of your decrees, that I may follow it to the end. Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart. Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight. Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word. Fulfill your promise to your servant, so that you may be feared. Take away the disgrace I dread, for your laws are good. How I long for your precepts! In your righteousness preserve my life.
The heart naturally beats for itself. It looks out for number one. We see life through customized lenses tinted with our desires, needs, and personalities. Our view of life is evaluated by how it impacts us. That’s why today’s prayer is so important.
God’s Word checks my heart. It shows me the right path. It calls me out when I take a detour. It shows me how to get back on the road. It instructs me how to stay on the journey that God has for me.
There are many distractions that beckon. They seem attractive from a distance; some are still attractive up close. But these distractions are all off the road. They cause us to stop listening to God and feed our own desires. They turn our eyes toward worthless things. That’s why we have to read God’s Word regularly. It keeps us headed in a direction that honors God.
Father, please turn my heart to Your Word. Please turn my eyes away from worthless things. Preserve my life according to Your Word. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
