A Hallelujah Life

Psalm 135:1-7
Praise the LORD. Praise the name of the LORD; praise him, you servants of the LORD, you who minister in the house of the LORD, in the courts of the house of our God. Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good; sing praise to his name, for that is pleasant. For the LORD has chosen Jacob to be his own, Israel to be his treasured possession. I know that the LORD is great, that our LORD is greater than all gods. The LORD does whatever pleases him, in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths. He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth; he sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses.

Anyone want to take a wild guess at what the psalmist is driving at in these verses? I am pretty sure the point is: Praise the Lord! The English phrase, “Praise the Lord!” comes from one powerful Hebrew word, “hallelujah.” According to this psalm (and many passages like it) followers of the Lord are to live a “hallelujah” life.

Praise is the act of expressing approval, admiration, and adoration. It includes belting out songs from the tops of our lungs and the bottoms of our hearts, but it doesn’t stop there. Praise must be expressed with all of our being. Some questions to consider:

  • Are you praising the Lord with your mouth? Do your words truly demonstrate your admiration of the eternal God?
  • Are you praising the Lord with your mind? Do your thoughts reflect His goodness?
  • Are you praising the Lord with your actions? Do you demonstrate a wholehearted love for God?
  • Are you praising the Lord with your money? Does your bank account demonstrate an expression of your commitment to serve Him and others?

A “hallelujah” life means more than just singing along with your favorite praise song downloads. Praise God with all you’ve got! He is worth far more than all you have!

Father, help me to live a whole and complete hallelujah life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
