Psalm 140:1-5  
For the director of music. A psalm of David.

Rescue me, LORD, from evildoers; protect me from the violent, who devise evil plans in their hearts and stir up war every day. They make their tongues as sharp as a serpent’s; the poison of vipers is on their lips. Keep me safe, LORD, from the hands of the wicked; protect me from the violent, who devise ways to trip my feet. The arrogant have hidden a snare for me; they have spread out the cords of their net and have set traps for me along my path. 

Do you have any enemies? Any person who would like to see you slip and fall? A person who talks behind your back? Maybe a few people who try their best to actually cause you to fall? 

David had a few enemies. There were foes that devised evil plans and tried to drag David and his men into war. Adversaries slandered him with sharp tongues, “the poison of vipers is on their lips.” Some set traps for David to succumb. His nemeses wouldn’t stop until they saw David go down.

David knew that he was no match for the evil plans, poisonous rumors, and hidden traps, so he turned to God for help. He prayed that God would rescue him and protect him “from the violent.” He asked God to keep him safe and guard him from the hidden traps. David’s prayer can be ours as well…if you have any enemies.

Father, I am no match for my enemies. They are shrewd. They are persistent. I am afraid that I will let down my guard and fall. Please protect me. Please rescue me. Please keep me safe. Please guard me against my enemies. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
