Psalm 140:6-13
I say to the LORD, “You are my God.” Hear, LORD, my cry for mercy. Sovereign LORD, my strong deliverer, you shield my head in the day of battle. Do not grant the wicked their desires, LORD; do not let their plans succeed. Those who surround me proudly rear their heads; may the mischief of their lips engulf them. May burning coals fall on them; may they be thrown into the fire, into miry pits, never to rise. May slanderers not be established in the land; may disaster hunt down the violent. I know that the LORD secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy. Surely the righteous will praise your name, and the upright will live in your presence.
Every day is a day of battle for the believer. The enemy is suited for war. He is looking for a weakness, an opening. He waits to find an unguarded moment. He stalks for a time to pounce and devour. He is shameless. He waits…for fatigue, discouragement, and pride. There are no rules by which he plays.
David prayed for the day of battle. He prayed that God would show mercy and be his “strong deliverer.” He asked God to be the shield on his head. He knew the enemy was ruthless and would hold nothing back. He knew his only hope of deliverance was with God.
Every day is a day of battle for the believer. Like David we proclaim to the Lord, “You are my God.” Our hope is not in our strength or intelligence. We know that left to ourselves defeat will come. Our prayer is David’s prayer. Lord, show Your mercy. Lord, be my strong deliverer. Lord, shield my head in the day of battle. Lord, let me live in the peace of Your presence.
Father, hear my prayer. I depend on You and You alone. I am no match for the enemy. Be my strong deliverer. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
