It is one thing to ask, “Why?” when we go through the inevitable challenges of life. I would argue that the “Why?” question is a natural and normal response from a broken heart. We believe that some amount of explanation would help the pain subside, bring understanding to our exhausted reasoning, and allow us to gain a measure of joy in our circumstances. If we could see how our pain fits into God’s big picture, that would certainly go a long way in the healing process, wouldn’t it? But when we bring accusations against God, we are on a dangerous detour.
In our passage today, it seems that Job has moved into the “No Go Zone.” As soon as he crossed from “Why?” into the land of “Accusations,” God was there to meet him.
Job 40:1-5
And the Lord said to Job: “Shall a faultfinder contend with the Almighty? He who argues with God, let him answer it.” Then Job answered the Lord and said: “Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth. I have spoken once, and I will not answer; twice, but I will proceed no further.”
Accusing God of wrongdoing strikes at his very character. His justice and love are challenged. His motives are questioned. His person is twisted from who he is—perfect, all-loving, and just—to who he isn’t—imperfect, flawed, and unjust.
To Job’s credit, he backs away from the accusations. He admits his unworthiness and inability to reply. In a symbolic but practical move, Job places his hand over his mouth. So…if you are going through a difficult time…I know this is tough…check your heart. Are you living with questions or accusations? Be careful to stay on the right side of the line.
Lord, in my difficult situation, please keep me from sinning. While I don’t understand, don’t allow my heart to venture into accusing you of wrongdoing. Like Job, help me to keep my hand over my mouth. For Christ’s sake. Amen.
