Refuge: Safe and Secure

What makes you feel secure? Where do you go for safety? What makes you smile a smile of confidence? What delivers a settled peace in your soul?

Here’s what some people trust in for security:

RELATIONSHIPS. Sooner or later, people will let you down.

INTIMACY. A short-term fix that leaves you emptier than before the fling.

CAREERS. Ever heard of “economic downturn” or “downsizing”?

401K. Take a ride on the roller coaster of the stock market and quarterly business reports.

SUBSTANCE. Enjoy the short high. The long low is a bummer.

YOURSELF. “I am the captain of my soul!” Really? Good luck with that.

Instead of trusting in the things around us, let’s trust in the One above us. Here’s what our heavenly Father says:

Leviticus 26:12-13
I will walk among you; I will be your God, and you will be my people. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt so you would no longer be their slaves. I broke the yoke of slavery from your neck so you can walk with your heads held high.

I love today’s passage because it reminds me of an all-important truth: God is the only source of true security. With our lives committed to Jesus Christ and our faith and trust securely in him, we are forgiven and free. We have been freed from the slavery of sin … and saved from death. We can walk through this life with our heads held high—joyfully awaiting the promise of eternal life with God!

Father, thank you for breaking the yoke of slavery. Thank you for delivering me from sin. Thank you for giving me eternal life! In the name of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
