Numbers 6:24-26
May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.
We all desire peace—a calmness and steadiness in a confusing and uncertain world. We want peace, and most of us fight against fear.
Sometimes, fear is physical. When the big black dog that lives down the road comes after me during my morning run, I am physically affected. Even though his owner has him on a leash, the growling, barking, lunging, and baring of teeth does something to the beat of my heart and the speed of my pace.
Many times, fear is emotional. It swirls in our minds and settles in our hearts. We ask questions like, “What if the job goes away?” “What if the tests show cancer?” “What if the surgery isn’t successful?” “What if the treatment doesn’t work?” “What if he leaves?” “What if I am not reconciled with my child?”
All those “what if” scenarios have a way of trapping us in a prison of fear. Yet we can escape. In times of trouble, the Lord gives us what we so desperately need: comfort, protection, peace—a way through fear. Relief comes when we get our minds off “what if” and focus on “The One Who Can.” While turmoil is inevitable, we have hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. Can you sense his smile on your life … his graciousness? Perhaps not in the grip of fear, but hold steady. He will restore peace.
Father, it is so easy to keep our sights on the storm. We need your help to keep our minds steadfast and trusting in you. Keep us anchored to you — the Rock eternal. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
