King Saul was in trouble. He was outnumbered by the Philistine army, who held the high ground, so he froze. He and his men took their position under a pomegranate tree. There he waited … and waited … and waited … but his son, Jonathan, couldn’t wait any longer.
1 Samuel 14:6
“Let’s go across to the outpost of those pagans,” Jonathan said to his armor bearer. “Perhaps the Lord will help us, for nothing can hinder the Lord. He can win a battle whether he has many warriors or only a few!”
Without his father’s knowledge, Jonathan decided to take matters into his own hands. His confidence in God’s deliverance is declared in today’s passage— “Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving, whether by many or by few” (NIV). After seeking God’s direction, Jonathan climbed up to the Philistines’ position and, with his armor-bearer, killed twenty enemy soldiers. Then, God rewarded his faith. Panic struck the whole Philistine army. “It was a panic sent by God” (1 Samuel 14:15 NIV).
Living without fear will not allow you to sit frozen under your “pomegranate tree.” You will be compelled to move forward in God’s will and face your circumstances. When God is on your side, nothing can hinder him from delivering you, regardless of the challenge. Now, move out from under the tree and watch God work in your life!
Father, don’t let us sit frozen under our “pomegranate tree” of fear. Help us move forward with the confidence that nothing, absolutely nothing, can hinder you from accomplishing your will in our lives. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
