Refuge: Patiently Waiting

The fear of uncertainty causes us to run … fast. We run to places we think will bring comfort. We run to places where the pain can be dulled temporarily. Fear causes us to run to unhealthy places that deliver short-lived satisfaction and false hope.

God has a different prescription for times of uncertainty. He tells us to stay put. He calls us to wait for the confidence. When we feel like bolting, he says, “Be strong.” When our courage melts like hot wax, he says, “Take heart.” Spurgeon wrote, “Wait at his door with prayer; wait at his foot with humility; wait at his table with service; wait at his window with expectancy.” The psalmist says it like this:

Psalm 27:14
Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.

Our waiting is not passing the time for God to arrive from a distant place; he is always present with us. Our waiting is not to give God time to determine his action plan. God is waiting for us to wait on him. He is waiting for us to transfer trust from ourselves so he can replace our fear with courage.

Father, it is so hard to wait. I like to take matters into my own hands. Help me slow down and wait in prayer, humility, service, and with expectancy. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
