Ever feel like you don’t measure up? Ever feel like life’s assignment is beyond your skill level? Convinced that you don’t have what it takes? Don’t feel alone. The line of people feeling inadequate stretches around the block. But you don’t have to stand stuck in that long line.
In today’s passage, David readily admits he doesn’t have what it takes. If God didn’t come to his aid, he concluded, “I might as well give up and die” (Psalm 28:1). When God heard David’s “prayer for mercy,” he broke out in praise.
Psalm 28:7
The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.
Real adequacy doesn’t come from our winsome personalities, framed degrees hanging on our walls, or experience in our fields of expertise. The room of inadequacy is packed with qualified people. The ability to meet each challenge and opportunity of life must come from the Lord. He is our strength and power, our shield of protection, and our source of trust. Help comes from him alone. God is our strength and shield. Sufficiency comes from him alone.
Father, we cannot do what you are calling us to do while stuck in the long line of inadequacy. Give us the strength to move out and find our sufficiency in you alone. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
