Psalm 139:7-10
I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me.
God is not limited by time or space. He is present everywhere at the same time in his whole being. There is nowhere in the entire universe, on land or sea, that a person can go to get away from God.
Admittedly, there are times when this is a disturbing truth. In our rebellion, we want to escape God’s presence. We don’t want him around when we engage in sinful activities, but God doesn’t play hide-and-seek. Wherever we go, he is already there.
Because of God’s omnipresence, we are never alone. He is there in our laughter and our tears. He is there when we pump our fists with excitement and when we hang our heads in despair. He stands by our side as we watch our loved ones breathe their last. He walks with us from the grave and through our grief. He never leaves us nor forsakes us. The omnipresent God is Immanuel—God with us through eternity.
Father, forgive us when we try to get away from you. Thank you for never leaving our side. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
