Refuge: The Sovereign Lord

Isaiah 40:10
Yes, the Sovereign Lord is coming in power. He will rule with a powerful arm. See, he brings his reward with him as he comes.

God’s sovereignty is the attribute by which he rules over all creation. To be sovereign, God must be all-knowing, all-powerful, and absolutely free. A. W. Tozer explains the reasons for this in The Knowledge of the Holy.

All-knowing. If there were “one datum of knowledge, however small, unknown to God, His rule would break down at that point. To be Lord over all the creation, He must possess all knowledge.”

All-powerful. If God were lacking “one infinitesimal modicum of power, that lack would end His reign and undo His kingdom; that one stray atom of power would belong to someone else, and God would be a limited ruler and hence not sovereign.”

Absolutely free. God must be “free to do whatever He wills to do anywhere at any time to carry out His eternal purpose in every single detail without interference. Were He less than free, He must be less than sovereign.”

In today’s passage, Isaiah tells us that God comes to us possessing great strength and bearing gifts. Think of it! The all-knowing, all-powerful, and absolutely free heavenly Father comes to you with a reward. Whatever your circumstance, you can trust him to bring good gifts to you. In fact, could it be that your situation, as difficult as it is, is a good gift in disguise?

Father, you are the sovereign Lord. We proclaim that you can be trusted! Give us the strength to trust. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

The book Refuge was my first purchase at the Chapel’s bookstore. I am enjoying this journey again, hearing the words that were powerful than, as they are now. He truly is unchanging. I read the Bible from begining to end for the first time. It definitely has given me confidence and courage to face these uncertain times. Bless you for not being afraid to preach the truth.
