Daniel 6:10-11
But when Daniel learned that the law had been signed, he went home and knelt down as usual in his upstairs room, with its windows open toward Jerusalem. He prayed three times a day, just as he had always done, giving thanks to his God. Then the officials went together to Daniel’s house and found him praying and asking for God’s help.
Like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, Daniel was in the group taken captive to Babylon. When a decree went out that for thirty days everyone was required to pray only to King Darius, Daniel ignored the command. He went home and prayed to God before open windows. He would not deny his Lord.
Daniel’s obedience to God resulted in a death sentence. Daniel was thrown into a den of lions, but God sent his angel and shut the mouths of the hungry beasts. When Daniel was lifted from the pit, “not a scratch was found on him, for he had trusted in his God” (Daniel 6:23).
Living without fear is living a life of trust. Our lives will be filled with inevitable challenges. How we respond to the challenges is the issue. Fear causes us to freeze or run to unhealthy places. Trust allows us to follow God wherever the path leads … even if it’s to a den of lions. There in the pit, we will find that God is more than enough. Whatever your “lion’s den,” trust God. He will deliver you from the pit.
Father, I need your help to trust you. Too often, fear overtakes my soul. Protect me from my propensity to freeze or run away. Fill me with your confidence and drive the fear from my heart. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
