Refuge: Unchangeable

Malachi 3:6
I am the Lord, and I do not change. That is why you descendants of Jacob are not already destroyed.

Everything changes. Money comes and goes. Investments are up and down. Spring becomes summer becomes fall becomes winter. Kids mature. Adults age. There are changes in jobs, homes, cities, and lifestyles. Everything changes.

God is immutable. Although God acts and feels emotions, he is unchanging in his being, perfection, and promises. Dutch theologian, Herman Bavinck, notes the great significance of this attribute:

The doctrine of God’s immutability is of the highest significance for religion. The contrast between being and becoming marks the difference between the creator and the creature. Every creature is continually becoming. It is changeable, constantly striving, seeks rest and satisfaction, and finds this rest in God, in him alone, for only he is pure being and no becoming.1

Find rest today in God’s immutability. He is “pure being and no becoming.” He is the Rock. He doesn’t change like shifting shadows (James 1:17). He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews13:8). He will not change his mind, his position, or his promises. Let your fearful heart settle peacefully on the unchanging and unchangeable person of God.

Father, thank you for being our Rock. Thank you for the certainty and security of your immutability. Thank you for never renegotiating your promises to us even when we renege on our promises to you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
