John 14:1-3
“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.”
Heaven is actual existence. Heaven is not a state of mind. Jesus told his disciples that he was going to get it ready. He promised he would come and take his followers to be with him. We will not float forever in a mental neverland. Heaven is real.
Heaven is a real place. Jesus said, “I am going to prepare a place for you.” He described heaven in our terminology, a house with many rooms. Later, John would try to describe its incomparable magnificence and beauty in the Revelation. Heaven is certain.
Heaven is for those who follow Jesus. Jesus spoke the words in today’s passage to his disciples, those who believed in him as the Son of God and trusted in his work on the cross as the only way to have a relationship with God. When they asked how to get to heaven, Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). Our confidence and certainty are found only in the person of Jesus. The path to forever is paved by the work of Christ.
Father, thank you for allowing us to know that we belong to Jesus and will spend eternity in heaven. We don’t have to guess, wish, or hope that one day we might go to heaven. Thank you that we can know for sure. In this life nothing else really matters. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
