Romans 8:38-39
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
I grew up believing that I could lose my relationship with God. I thought that I could be a Christian in the morning, sin by lunch, and therefore be headed for hell in the afternoon. I thought that my relationship with Jesus depended on me. How about you? What does your relationship with God depend on?
One day as I was studying Scripture in a seminary class, I learned the truth found in today’s passage. God has promised that nothing can separate me from his love found in Christ alone. It was like a burden had been lifted from my shoulders. After class, as I walked to my car, the truth of these verses became personal, and I knew that I was a child of God and would forever be!
Nothing in all creation can separate me from the love of God, not even death. That means that after death, God still loves me. That means that after death, I am aware of his love. That means that after death, I am still alive! For the believer, death is simply a transition from the love of God on earth to the love of God in heaven, forever.
Dear Father, I stand firm in the truth that nothing can separate me from you. I know that no power in heaven or earth can remove me from your love. Today I stand secure in Jesus. In his name I pray. Amen.
