True Greatness

Matthew 23:11-12

The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

A few years ago during a presidential debate, a brash CEO described himself and everything he had ever done as a tremendous success. He listed his accomplishments with one superlative after another, even describing his temperament as “phenomenal.” When asked what he would choose as his secret security code name, he jokingly said, “Humble.”

Standing down the line from the CEO was another extremely accomplished candidate. His slow, thoughtful speech was striking compared to the quick cadence of the other contenders. One reporter noted that during the debate this soft-spoken man faded into the background standing among the candidates who were vying for airtime.

Hubris works well for cable news sound bites. However, it falls short in the arena of godly leadership. True greatness, in the eyes of Jesus, is not produced from a stage, in a boardroom, on a television show, from a governor’s mansion, the halls of Congress, or even an operating room. Jesus is clear. Self-exaltation always backfires. Humility results in promotion by God Himself!

Father, help me understand, accept, and practice true humility. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
