He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble.
Mary’s great song of praise continued as she proclaimed the “mighty deeds” of God. God’s arm is a symbol of His power and action. His strength is not limited to the heavens. His might is seen as He reaches down and does His work among people on earth.
Mary lived in a world of the rich and powerful. The Roman government ruled her country. She was familiar with Roman soldiers demonstrating their clout in her little village. She heard her parents complain that Rome was taxing them into poverty. And she saw the rich tax collectors, Jews who had sold out to Rome.
Now God had reached down to her! She was a poor Jewish girl living in Galilee. She had little in terms of wealth, power, and status. She didn’t live in a palace or rule from a powerful seat on a royal throne. Yet God had chosen her! She would be the mother of His Son! He had indeed scattered the proud and lifted up the humble!
Lord, thank You for using the humble to do Your heavenly work. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
