And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”
In his amazing life of faith, George Mueller watched God supply the needs for his orphan ministry time and time again. He simply prayed and believed that God would provide all that was needed. Mueller said that his faith was the same kind of faith that all Christians have. His faith, however, had “been a little more developed by exercise.” Here is Mueller’s instruction on how Christians can develop their faith.
Now, my beloved brothers and sisters, begin in a little way. At first I was able to trust the Lord for ten dollars, then for a hundred dollars, then for a thousand dollars, then for one hundred thousand dollars, and now, with the greatest of ease, I could trust Him for millions of dollars if there were occasion for it. But first, I should quietly, carefully, deliberately examine and see whether what I was trusting for, was something in accordance with His promises in His written Word. If I found it was, the amount of difficulties would be no hindrance to my trust.
…God has never failed me! Trust Him for yourselves and find how true to His Word He is.
Mueller reminds us of two important truths about faith. First, we must trust God for things that are in line with his will. Mueller says to trust God for the things that are “in accordance with His promises in His written Word.” Secondly, faith is a learned discipline. Start by trusting God for smaller things. “Begin in a little way.” For Mueller it was trusting for ten dollars, then for a hundred dollars…. Like lifting weights builds muscle, answered prayer builds faith. So here is Mueller’s challenge to each of us: “Trust Him for yourselves and find how true to His Word He is.”
Talking Points
- Ask God to help you trust him for small things. Then record in a journal how those prayers were answered. Build your spiritual muscles.
- Keep that journal with your children. Review it often. Help your children grow in their faith by watching God work in your family.
Father, I have so much to learn about trusting you. Help me with the baby steps I need to take in order to walk and live by faith. Help me learn firsthand that you are always true to your Word. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
