Discipline—Not Rejection

by | Aug 6, 2018 | Daily Devotion, Psalms | 0 comments

Psalm 94:8-15
Take notice, you senseless ones among the people; you fools, when will you become wise? Does he who fashioned the ear not hear? Does he who formed the eye not see? Does he who disciplines nations not punish? Does he who teaches mankind lack knowledge? The LORD knows all human plans; he knows that they are futile. Blessed is the one you discipline, LORD, the one you teach from your law; you grant them relief from days of trouble, till a pit is dug for the wicked. For the LORD will not reject his people; he will never forsake his inheritance. Judgment will again be founded on righteousness, and all the upright in heart will follow it.

“Blessed is the one you discipline.” Doesn’t feel like it, does it? But it’s true. Discipline is a lifesaver, not only for us but also for those around us.

Discipline will save the life of a child intent on playing by a dangerous street. It is teaching in the most loving form. Discipline demonstrates a love and care that shows we are engaging in our children’s lives. Discipline addresses a subject that is harmful in the present and left unchecked may be devastating in the future.

Don’t mistake discipline for rejection. Rejection ignores the danger. Discipline gets involved. Rejection drives a person away. Discipline draws us near.  Discipline shows God cares enough to get our attention and provides us safety.

Father, discipline is painful. But thank You for loving me so much that You are willing to work in my life, get my attention, and bring me back from my dangerous pursuits. Thank You for blessing me with Your discipline. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
