Isaiah 9:6
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called…Everlasting Father….
This name for Jesus, Everlasting Father, should not be confused with God the Father, the first Person of the Trinity. Everlasting Father is an expression used to describe Christ’s relationship to time, not his relationship to the other members of the Trinity. This name explains Jesus as the One who holds authority over all things from eternity past to eternity future.
The prophet Micah wrote that the One who was to be born in Bethlehem would be the eternal God (5:2). John made this clear that in the beginning, Jesus—the Word—was God and was with God (John 1:1). Paul explained that Jesus was before all things, created all things, and “in him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:16-17).
Many reduce Jesus to a baby born in a manger, raised in poor circumstances, became a great teacher in Israel, and then met an untimely death as a victim of Roman power and religious jealousy. Such thinking is false and misleading. Jesus is the Everlasting Father. His authority spans eternity. His visit to earth was purposed to pay the penalty for our sins. The Everlasting Father is the Author of life (Acts 3:15) and the Author of everlasting life (John 3:16).
Lord Jesus,
I acknowledge that you are the Everlasting Father. The One who was, is, and is to come. Thank you for being the Author of life. Thank you for providing everlasting life for all who trust in you.
In your name I pray. Amen.
