Experiencing Spiritual Freedom: God is For Us

What if God was not on your side? What if he didn’t have your back? What if he decided to take his eyes off you and look the other way? What if God said, “You are on your own!” That’s what King David pondered as he wrote Psalm 124. What would happen if God decided he wasn’t for you any longer? David concluded that Israel’s enemies would have “swallowed us alive.” It would be like a torrent; “the raging waters would have swept us away” (Psalm 124:1-5 NIV).

But God is on our side! Here’s the confidence that Paul gives.

Romans 8:31-34
What then shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.

“If God is for us, who can be against us?” That’s a rhetorical question that calls for the emphatic answer, “No one!” God’s actions show us that he is on our side and will graciously give us all things by the demonstration of the depth of his love. He gave up his only Son for us. When we were wallowing in our sin, when our backs were turned on him, God sent his Son to die for our sins. By placing all our sins on Jesus at the cross, Jesus paid the penalty for sin—one time for all time.

So, if God did the greatest thing for us, he will do lesser things for us. No one can charge us with sin. God has declared us, “Not guilty!” No one can condemn us. Jesus, who paid for every sin by his death and was raised to life again, is at the powerful right hand of God speaking on our behalf.

– God is on our side!
– God does have our back!
– God will never take his eyes off us!
– God will never say, “You are on your own.” He says, “I will never leave you or forsake you.”
– God says, “You are mine!”

Father,
Thank you for never leaving us, never abandoning us, never neglecting us, never forgetting us. Thank you for your promise to always give us everything we need.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
