What if you could experience spiritual freedom? Freedom from fear. Freedom from anxiety. Freedom from discouragement. Freedom from a heart that is never content. What if you could move from the heartache of the past, the guilt that seems impossible to shake, the regret embedded in your heart? What if you could see yourself as God sees you?
Today, we begin twelve days en route to spiritual freedom. The path we’ll travel reveals the Spirit’s power, our identity in Christ, and our future glory. The road is called Romans 8. Let’s get started.
Romans 8:1-2
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.
Scripture uses a powerful description for the believer. It’s called being “in Christ Jesus.” This is a place of relationship. We are united with Christ in his death and in his life. That union provides intimacy, forgiveness, freedom, and protection. Our life is “hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3).
In Christ, Paul says, there is “no condemnation.” Because of Jesus, I have been declared “Not guilty!” Sin’s penalty has been paid in full by Jesus, and my debt has been forgiven. In Christ, there is no condemnation; I am protected for eternity. There is nothing I can do to make God love me more. There is nothing I can do to make God love me less. Nothing will ever separate me from his love. I will never experience the penalty of eternal death and separation from God.
Today, starting right now, you can live in freedom. The “law of the Spirit of life has set [us] free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.” Before Jesus, I operated under the control of sin and death. No longer! Through Christ, I have been set free from sin’s control!
That means, today, starting right now, you can live in spiritual freedom.
Lord Jesus, you have taken away the condemnation that would have sent me to a hellish eternal separation from God. You have set me free from sin’s control. You gave yourself as a sin offering for me. How can I ever thank you?! In your name. Amen.
