Nehemiah 12:43

And they offered great sacrifices that day and rejoiced, for God had made them rejoice with great joy; the women and children also rejoiced. And the joy of Jerusalem was heard far away.

If you had led the rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem, how would you have celebrated God’s great work? How about marching on top of the wall? That’s what Nehemiah did. He had one choir singing, praising, and marching in one direction and another choir singing, praising, and marching in the opposite direction until they met to combine their praise in one awesome chorus. Then they climbed down from the wall to do more praising in the house of God. Men, women, and children joined together, singing so loudly that “the joy of Jerusalem was heard far away.”

If the people of Jerusalem had something to rejoice about, we have so much more! Believers have been declared, “Not guilty” and made righteous! The Holy Spirit lives in us! Because of Jesus, we can experience abundant life today and then move to heaven forever! Our lives have been rebuilt, restored, and redeemed! Living for Christ is – or should be – a daily celebration. Let’s live today in such a way that people take note of our deep joy and deliberate rejoicing.

Talking Points

  • Ask God to help you be an unencumbered worshiper so that your praise can be heard from far away.
  • Ask God to impress upon your children that expressive worship is biblical worship.

Father, may our joy and rejoicing reflect the lives you have rebuilt through Jesus. In his name. Amen.
