Mark 14:3

While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.

The Wednesday, before going to the cross, Jesus told His disciples that He was going to be crucified. The religious leaders made plans to seize Him, and Judas made plans to betray Him. And on that Wednesday, as Jesus ate at the home of Simon the Leper, a woman poured a jar of expensive perfume on the head of our Lord.

Picture the scene. While the disciples were worried about the waste, a woman, very quietly and tenderly, demonstrated deep love and devotion for Jesus. She took perfume worth a year’s wages and prepared Jesus for burial. Here was a woman who understood that worship was more than an hour on the weekend. Her worship was extravagant. Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”(Mark 14:9). Jesus loves extravagant worshipers.

That night as Jesus lay on His bed, He alone knew it would be His last time to rest until He closed His eyes in the painful death of the cross. But on that night, as He closed his eyes, He smelled the fragrance of the perfume sacrificially given to show love and honor to Him alone.

Father, may my worship demonstrate such deep devotion and love for You that it gives off a fragrant aroma to all around me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
