So, what does God do with our sin? I don’t mean to be flippant with that question. I know that my sin separated me from God, and Jesus paid the penalty for my sin on the cross. He took on God’s wrath for sin and satisfied the Father by his amazing work.
And it’s interesting that in Scripture, God wants to communicate his forgiveness to the point that he uses several illustrations to show us what he does with our sin. Here are a few passages to consider.
Psalm 103:10-13
He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.
How far is the east from the west? Infinitely far. God removes our sins so far from us that only infinity and beyond can describe the separation!
Isaiah 38:17
…But in love you have delivered my life from the pit of destruction, for you have cast all my sins behind your back.
God does not hide our sins behind his back just to bring them out again at an opportune time. With his omnipotence, he casts all our sins far behind him.
Isaiah 43:25
I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.
God blots out our transgressions! He covers them over with ink, erases them from the board, and deletes them from the screen. But that’s not all. The omniscient God, who knows everything there is to know about everything there is to know, chooses to forget our sin!
Micah 7:18-19
Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love. He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.
Who is a God like our God? He is one who delights in steadfast love. He stomps on our sins with his powerful foot. He throws our sin into the sea and lets them sink to the depths, never to be retrieved.
What does God do with our sin? Through Jesus, God eliminates our transgressions so we can be his children, live in freedom, and enjoy eternity forever!
Who is a God like our God?!
Lord Jesus, thank you for paying the penalty for all my sins on the cross. Thank you for providing complete and final forgiveness for my sins by your great sacrifice. As I think of your forgiveness, I am overcome with thanksgiving. But, Lord Jesus, may I never take forgiveness lightly. May I never forget that forgiveness was accomplished by your stretched-out arms and nail-pierced hands on the cross. In your name. Amen.
