C. H. Spurgeon pastored in London in the 1800s. His writing is relevant and straight to the point. In a book called An All-round Ministry, Spurgeon exhorts believers to do something that counts for Jesus. Here’s what he says:
“[Christians] do something; do something; DO SOMETHING. While Committees waste their time over resolutions, do something. While Societies and Unions are making constitutions, let us win souls. Too often we discuss, and discuss, and discuss, while Satan only laughs in his sleeve…. I pray you, be men of action all of you. Get to work….” (C. H. Spurgeon, An All-round Ministry, p. 55)
Long before Spurgeon, the apostle Peter challenged Christians to get to work.
1 Peter 1:13
Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
The apostle Peter was writing to a group of people getting ready to face persecution. But his message was not, “Find a cave and hide!” Peter told the believers to get to work! Prepare your minds for action—this is not a time to join a book club. Prepare your heart for self-control—you are going to feel like running, but you must stand firm. Place your hope fully on grace—difficult times are coming. Just as you have experienced God’s grace in the past, he has more to give.
My challenge today is for you who always have a plan to do something…starting tomorrow. My challenge today is for you who use “I need more information” as a delay tactic. My challenge today is for you who would rather discuss the finer points of theology over a cup of coffee than share the gospel with a friend. My challenge today is for you who would rather critique the service than serve the Church. For God’s sake—DO SOMETHING!
Father, please point out our areas of inaction, bring the conviction of the Spirit, give us the courage to repent, and make us people of action. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
