“Hatred stirs up strife,” the proverb says (Proverbs 10:12a). It’s true, isn’t it? When we dislike a person, we want to prove them wrong. If they say, “Up,” we say, “Down!” If they say, “Right,” we say, “Left!” If they say the sky is blue, we argue it is more like turquoise. Dislike for another person drives us to demonstrate animosity. However, there is a second part to the proverb. “Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses” (Prov 10:12b). Peter paraphrases this proverb in our passage today.
1 Peter 4:8
Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.
This passage reminds us that we should practice a sincere love for everyone God places in our paths. This type of love promotes harmony, not dissension. It desires to build up, not tear down. It allows others to have a bad day occasionally. It gives people the benefit of the doubt. “Whoever loves a quarrel loves sin” (Proverbs 17:19 NIV). But a person committed to loving one another earnestly is committed to forgiving others and living in obedience to God.
So, the next time you are ready to point a finger, practice patience. When you want to go for the “kill,” go for kindness. When envy rears its ugly head, knock it down. Shred the file titled “Record of Wrongs.” When you want something for yourself, do something for others. Practice love, and you will be able to overlook the sins of others. And…others who practice love will be able to overlook your sins as well!
Father, thank you for demonstrating your love to us in Jesus. We know our hearts and the depth of our sin. Thank you for forgiving us. Now, help us love others and show them the same forgiveness that you have shown to us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
