In today’s passage, Peter addresses the responsibility of a husband. Let’s read the passage and then break it down.
1 Peter 3:7
Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.
Peter’s instruction to husbands is straight to the point.
- Be understanding: Always consider your wife’s needs before yours.
- Show honor: This word is pertaining to something of great value; something that should be respected. Your wife is a valued gift from God. Honor her as such.
- Never be harsh: The phrase “weaker vessel” refers to the fact that a woman is generally not as physically strong as a man. I believe Peter is speaking directly to those who would in any way try to hurt or intimidate their wives. That is forbidden. Treat them with honor and as equal heirs of salvation.
- Be clean before God: Men, when we neglect or abuse our responsibilities as husbands, it is a spiritual issue. Disobedience disrupts our communication with God.
Peter’s instruction is not fancy or flowery. He is speaking to men in a concise and straightforward manner. Husbands must lead their homes. And they must lead God’s way. Failure here ends in a broken family…and a trail of broken hearts.
Father, I pray for each husband. May we be considerate and loving in our relationship with our wives. May we be respectful, valuing our wives as a gift from you. Never allow us to be harsh. Keep us clean before you and our channels of prayer open. May we honor you in our marriages. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
