Psalm 121
A song of ascents.
I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD watches over you—the LORD is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.
The world is an uncertain place. Rogue nations continue to develop nuclear arms. Extremists use terrorism to wage war. Another mass shooting kills innocent victims. Breaking news interrupts regularly scheduled programming to show viewers live footage of another natural disaster’s aftermath.
And then it gets closer to home. Things change in our lives from day to day. Many have tests, treatments, and surgeries that are on this week’s schedule. Others have jobs that are on the bubble. Too many marriages are hanging together with one last thin thread of commitment. As you look to the mountainous challenges ahead, the words of the psalmist hit home, “Where does my help come from?”
The answer: The Lord! The Maker of heaven and earth! The unchanging God watches over you. He never sleeps, protecting you day and night. He leaves with you in the morning and comes home with you at night. He watches over you throughout the day. God is the only certainty. He will hold you with His unshakeable hand in this uncertain world.
Father, help us hold on to You and never let go. Thank You for never letting go of us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
