Names of God: Helper

Before Jesus died on the cross, he promised his disciples that he would not leave them alone. He would send them “another Helper.” Jesus had to go away, but this new Helper would be with them forever.

John 14:15-17
If you love me, you will keep my commandments.   And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

The English name helper is from the Greek word parakletos. It means “intercessor,” “advocate,” and “encourager.” The Helper is the One who lives within every believer, empowering us to live a life pleasing to God. He sealed us (Ephesians 1:13-14), teaches us (1 Corinthians 2:9-12), guides us (John 16:13), gifts us (1 Peter 4:10), assures us (Romans 8:16), prays for us (Romans 8:26-27), and controls us (Ephesians 5:18).

The Holy Spirit indwells us. Paul reminds believers that our body is the temple of God because he lives in us. Paul says, “You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body” (1 Corinthians 6:19b-20). Because the Helper lives in us, we don’t have to go to a “holy place” to worship God; we are the “holy place,” the temple where the eternal God resides! Wherever we are, the Helper is right there with us. He will always give us what we need to do what God is calling us to do.

Father,
Thank you for sending the Helper. Thank you for the Holy Spirit’s ministry in my life. Help me realize that I am indeed your temple and that you are always with me. Help me call on you for the power I need to live a life of obedience.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
