Names of God: King of Kings

The Jewish people were looking for a king. Oppressed under the heavy hand of Rome, they wanted a leader to deliver them and rule over them. The coming of their king was not what they expected. A baby born to poor parents in the little town of Bethlehem went unnoticed, except for some shepherds in the fields and magi from the east.

Then things started to change. Jesus healed the disabled and the sick and caused the blind to see. He fed a crowd of 5,000 men plus women and children. He brought a dead man back to life. When he rode into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, one religious leader noted that it seemed the whole world was following him. Their hopes and dreams were shattered when Jesus died on the cross.

But three days later, the King rose from the dead. He conquered death itself. He paid the ransom for sin’s penalty. He made a way for all to have a personal relationship with the Creator. God is not only our King; he alone is supreme, the “blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords.”

1 Timothy 6:13-16
I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which he will display at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords,  who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.

Heavenly Father,
You are the blessed and only Sovereign. You alone are the Creator. You are immortal and live in unapproachable light. You are the King of kings and Lord of lords. To you be honor and eternal dominion forever.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
