Names of God: Light of the World

John 8:12
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

Darkness describes a heavy blackness that hides a person’s path. It stops progress, leaving a person paralyzed. Motion is halted in the drape of darkness—light illuminates. The path is made clear. Brightness allows movement.

Jesus is the light of the world. He reveals the way to God.

Darkness is a cosmic cover-up. It obscures God’s creation and purpose. It keeps people in ignorance and fear. Light exposes. Whatever is around can be seen clearly. It gives understanding and wisdom.

Jesus is the light of the world. He exposes error with the truth.

Darkness confuses. Each path is vague. Each crossway is concealed. Direction is meaningless in darkness. Light explains. The way is made certain. The path is revealed. Decisions can be made regarding direction.

Jesus is the light of the world.

He is the only way to have a relationship with the living God.

The person who follows Jesus “will not walk in darkness.” J. C. Ryle well says, “The spiritual light that Christ gives is independent of time or place, is not affected by sickness or death, burns on forever and cannot be quenched…guiding [us] in [our] journey through life….”

Jesus is the light of the world!

Father,
Thank you for sending Jesus—the light of the world—to expel the darkness and reveal the way to eternal life.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
