Names of God: The Truth

Harrison Butker told the truth. Speaking at the graduation of a Catholic school, the NFL kicker, a devout Catholic, spoke about the sanctity of life, the importance of marriage, and the great calling of parenthood. However, many have taken exception to these truths embedded in the Christian faith. USA Today called him “sexist” and “homophobic.” Coaches and teammates said while they didn’t agree with what he said, he did have the right to say it. The NFL distanced itself from him. Some called for his dismissal from his team. Some remarks cannot be printed here.

Butker spoke the truth, but…what is truth anyway? Here’s what Jesus said in a response to one of his disciples.

John 14:6
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

The word “truth” describes that which is without error, faultless, perfect. Truth is indisputable fact, the actual state of the matter. Truth is another word for honesty and integrity. When something or someone is true, you can observe from every angle and find no fault. Jesus personified truth. Jesus was filled with “grace and truth” (John 1:14). Grace and truth actually “came through Jesus” (John 1:17). To say that Jesus is the truth is to say that there is no speck of doubt or hint of question in who he is, what he does, and what he says. Jesus is God! His word is truth (John 17:17). When you follow Jesus, you follow the truth.

Many people called for Harrison Butker to retract his statements about the basic truths of the Christian faith. Here’s how he responded:

Our love for Jesus, and thus, our desire to speak out, should never be outweighed by the longing of our fallen nature to be loved by the world. Glorifying God and not ourselves should always remain our motivation despite any pushback or even support. I lean on those closest to me for guidance, but I can never forget that it is not people but Jesus Christ who I’m trying to please.

Lord Jesus,
You are the truth. I can stake my life and eternity on your words. Everything you say is true. You lead me to freedom…now and forever.
In your name, I pray. Amen.
