Power in the Psalms: Waiting

The fear of uncertainty causes us to run . . . fast. We run to where we think will bring comfort. We run to where the pain can be dulled, at least for a while. These are unhealthy places that deliver short-lived satisfaction and false hope.

God has a different prescription for uncertainty. He tells us to stay put. Here’s what David says about waiting in Psalm 27.

Psalm 27:14
Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!

God calls us to wait on him for confidence. When we feel like bolting, he says, “Be strong.” When our courage is melting like hot wax, he says, “Take heart.” C. H. Spurgeon wrote, “Wait at his door with prayer; wait at his feet with humility; wait at his table with service; wait at his window with expectancy.”

Our waiting is not about passing the time for God to arrive from a distant place; he is always present with us. Our waiting is not so God has time to determine his plan of action. God is waiting for us to wait on him!

Father, it is so hard to wait. I like to take matters into my own hands. Help me slow down and wait in prayer, humility, and with expectancy. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
