People will always let you down. Even those who love you the most. Even those you consider a mentor. Even those who want what’s best for you. It’s in our DNA—we disappoint others. But there is One who never disappoints.
Psalm 146:3-6 (ESV)
Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation. When his breath departs, he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish. Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, who keeps faith forever; who executes justice for the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry.
Human beings cannot save. Even the most powerful will be robbed by the thief of death. On the very day the prince dies, his royal life ends like a mist blown by the wind.
So, who are you going to trust? Where do you find confidence? If your hope is not found in the Lord, sooner or later, your teetering tower of trust will come crashing down. Without God, it’s just a matter of time before your false calm turns to feverish chaos. But there is One who is eternal and “who keeps faith forever.” Blessed is the person whose confidence is in the Lord!
Father, it is tempting to put our trust in ourselves and the people around us. Give us great leaders, but never let us forget that you are the only One who will stand for eternity. Help us follow hard after you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
