John 1:12-13
But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.
In his song “Identity,” Lecrae raps, “I’m not the shoes I wear. I’m not the clothes I buy. I’m not the house I live in. I’m not the cars I drive, no. I’m not the job I work. You can’t define my worth by nothing on God’s green earth. My identity is found in Christ, is found in Christ.” You may or may not appreciate Christian rap, but you can’t deny the biblical truth found in this song.
Too many people—yes, even believers—find their significance in possessions. I feel better about myself when I am wearing the “right” clothes. I hold my head higher when I have the “desired” address. Check out how significant I really am when you see me driving “the car.” When I share my vocation at a social gathering and the prestige that comes with it, then I really feel significant.
When my identity is found in what I wear, where I live, what I drive, or what I do, I am plagued by an internal fear of insignificance. These things don’t last. Significance comes only when my identity is in Christ. Nothing can change that. It never goes out of style. It never rusts or decays. It never gets old or breaks down. I am a child of God and will forever be!
Father, please don’t let me look for significance in possessions, position, or appearance. Remind me often that I am your child and will be your child forever. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
