Refuge: A Strong Fortress

Proverbs 18:10-12
The name of the Lord is a strong fortress; the godly run to him and are safe. The rich think of their wealth as a strong defense; they imagine it to be a high wall of safety. Haughtiness goes before destruction; humility precedes honor.

Walls and towers were important parts of a biblical city’s protection. Many cities built high towers at the corners of their walls. These towers were hollow, with a staircase reaching to the top. Each served as a watchtower to spot invading armies and provide the defensive upper hand. The height placed archers at a distinct advantage as the enemy approached.

Many people construct “strong defenses” today. Some are built with money. As our verse says, the rich imagine their wealth as “a high wall of safety.” Others feel invincible due to their intelligence, expertise, training, or position, but pride in ourselves or our possessions is always a red flag. Proverbs 18:12 reminds us that “haughtiness goes before destruction.”

Those who follow Jesus realize that only he is the place of true security and protection. That’s why we run to Jesus “and are safe.” Only Christ protects us throughout this life. Jesus is the only One who can deliver us safely home.

Lord Jesus, thank you for being my strong fortress. Thank you for the invitation to come into your security throughout this life and throughout eternity. Amen.
