Psalm 34:18
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.
Broken hearts come in many forms. Some are caused by sixth-grade breakups, others by a spouse walking out after twenty-five years. Some come from the rejection of a dear friend, others by reckless words that pierce like a sword. Broken hearts also come from job loss, illness, loneliness, the death of loved ones, or the death of a dream.
Broken hearts come in many forms. Whatever the cause, here is something we know for sure: the Lord is always with us! He never leaves or lets us go. He is close with his comfort. He rescues those who are crushed in spirit.
Here’s the amazing thing: broken hearts highlight his presence. There is something about a crushed spirit that turns up the volume of his voice. When our hearts hurt, we hear him more clearly and see him more distinctly. Listen for his voice. He is close to you.
Father, I pray for those reading this today with broken hearts. Let them feel your presence. Let them sense your love. Wrap your arms around them and let them be enveloped by your closeness. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
