John 3:16
For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
The ending starts at the beginning. At birth, the body, always vulnerable to a disease or tragic demise, begins the process of aging, which culminates in a worn-out, weakened fight for the last breath. Death is the feared and final enemy (1 Corinthians 15:26).
However, it doesn’t have to be. God provided a way for death to transition us to life. We are sinners deserving eternal death—separation from God forever. Now that is something to fear! But God loved us so much that he sent his Son to pay sin’s penalty on the cross. Jesus died so that we could live—forever!
The transition is personally put into effect when I believe in Jesus alone as the One who paid the penalty for my sins. When I trust in the work of Jesus on my behalf, spiritual death is replaced with a spiritual heartbeat. Physical death is simply a transition, and eternal death is replaced with eternal life. Because of Jesus, I can know with certainty that when I die, I will pass from physical death to everlasting life! That’s confidence!
Dear heavenly Father, thank you for sending Jesus to die on the cross for my sins. Thank you that I can live with confidence, knowing that when I close my eyes in death, I will open them to see my Savior. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
