Fear and doubt are uninvited emotions for us all. They roll in like thirty-foot rogue waves and crash onto the shores of our souls. They produce anxiety that leads to more fear and “what if” questions that lead to doubt.

Fresh from being delivered out of slavery, the Israelites were caught between the powerful Egyptians and the Red Sea. As you can imagine, they were terrified. Fear and doubt took over. They cried out, “It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!” Moses calmed them with these words, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today … The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still” (Exodus 14:12,14 NIV). The New Living Translation says it like this:

Exodus 14:14
The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.

Here they come rolling in, the waves of fear and doubt caused by sickness, job loss, a relationship breakup, illness of a loved one, discouragement, and uncertainty about tomorrow. You can’t stand up under the force of the crashing waves. You don’t have to. The Lord will absorb the powerful force for you. Just stay calm.

Lord, I want to stand firm, but there are times when fear takes over. I want to live with faith, but there are times when doubt bursts through the door of my heart. O Father, help me be still and watch you fight the battle for me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
