Psalm 56:3-4
But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. I praise God for what he has promised. I trust in God, so why should I be afraid? What can mere mortals do to me?
It is not a matter of “if I am ever afraid” but “when.” Note the first five words of today’s passage. David, the man after God’s own heart, was afraid. This psalm was written when the Philistines had overtaken him in Gath—captured by the Philistines. Now, that would strike fear in the heart of any person.
However, when the waves of fear come crashing in, David chooses to trust. He moves his focus from the situation and locks in on God. Mere mortals may have seized him, but they cannot seize his God. For David and for us, trusting God drives the fear away.
Who or what enemy has captured your heart? Use the natural fear as a warning signal. Let the rising tides of fear be held back by barricades of trust. Since God is with us, who can stand against us?
Father, when fear comes, it is so easy to be absorbed by the terror of the day and the “what ifs” of tomorrow. When we are afraid, help us put our trust and confidence in you. Replace our fear with faith. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
