Refuge: Incomprehensible

Isaiah 40:12-13
Who else has held the oceans in his hand? Who has measured off the heavens with his fingers? Who else knows the weight of the earth or has weighed the mountains and hills on a scale? Who is able to advise the Spirit of the Lord? Who knows enough to give him advice or teach him?

Someone has well said that we need to be reminded more than we need to be taught. I think there is a lot of truth to that. It is seldom a new nugget of truth that comforts me. More often it is the reminder of something I have forgotten or had pushed to a far corner of my heart.

It seems that Isaiah is following the “reminded more than taught” adage in today’s passage. He doesn’t provide new information but, by a series of rhetorical questions, he reminds us of who God is.

Who else has held the oceans in his hand?
Only God can do that!
Who has measured off the heavens with his fingers?
That is a God thing for sure!
Who else knows the weight of the earth? No one but God!
Or has weighed the mountains and hills on a scale? God!
Who is able to advise the Spirit of the Lord? I certainly can’t!
Who knows enough to give him advice or teach him? No one!

When you need comfort and encouragement, when you need the courage to face another day, you don’t need a new book; you need an old book! Read God’s Word to remind you of who he is. Then ask the sovereign Lord to give you the strength you need.

Lord, as I read your Word, remind me again and again of who you are, who I am in you, and how much you love me. Never let me forget that I am a child of the sovereign Lord. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
