Refuge: The Battle Belongs to the Lord

The giant was nine feet tall! His name was Goliath. Day after day, he challenged the Israelite army to a one-on-one battle, winner-takes-all. After forty days, no one had stepped forward. The soldiers were overtaken with fear.

On day forty-one, a young boy named David arrived, bringing food to his three brothers serving in the army. When he heard Goliath’s challenges, he was incensed that a Philistine was mocking the army of the living God. David accepted the giant’s challenge.

1 Samuel 17:45,47
David replied to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. … And everyone assembled here will know that the Lord rescues his people, but not with sword and spear. This is the Lord’s battle, and he will give you to us!”

You know the rest of the story. Dave faced Goliath with only a sling and five stones. David’s first shot landed in the middle of the giant’s forehead.

Living without fear means facing our giants, and everyone has a giant or two. As the song, Same God says, “I may not face Goliath, but I have my own giants.” Our giants stand before us, ready to take us down, but we can face them in the name of the Lord Almighty. Standing alone, you are no match for your giant, but God is the One who fights with you and for you. Remember, your battle belongs to the Lord. Read that amazing truth one more time …YOUR BATTLE BELONGS TO THE LORD!

Father, help that truth sink deep into my heart. So often, I am overtaken with fear as I face my personal giants. Remind me that the battle belongs to you. Help me move forward without fear. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
