The people of Israel were free from the slavery of Egypt, but they were not free from the slavery of fear. After exploring the promised land, the majority reported, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are. We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.” Only two men contradicted the discouraging reports.
Joshua and Caleb had a different spirit. They followed the Lord wholeheartedly. They pleaded with the people to obey God and follow him into the land of Canaan. They were certain that God would defeat the enemy no matter how big or how many. Here’s what they said.
Numbers 14:8-9
And if the Lord is pleased with us, he will bring us safely into that land and give it to us. It is a rich land flowing with milk and honey. Do not rebel against the Lord, and don’t be afraid of the people of the land. They are only helpless prey to us! They have no protection, but the Lord is with us! Don’t be afraid of them!
Unfortunately, the people followed the majority and, as a result, died wandering in the desert. Only Joshua and Caleb entered the land of promise.
Living without fear allows you to embrace the promises of God. Instead of paralysis, you can move forward in God’s strength and power. Your “enemies” surround you—illness, uncertainty, job loss, grief, relationship struggles. Many challenges in life seem bigger than you are. In fact, they are bigger than you are! However, they are not bigger than the God you serve. The Lord is with you! Don’t be afraid!
Father, don’t let us shrink back in fear and miss your promises. Give us spirits like Joshua and Caleb. Help us follow you wholeheartedly. Help us follow you with confidence. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
