Romans 11:33-36
Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways! For who can know the Lord’s thoughts? Who knows enough to give him advice? And who has given him so much that he needs to pay it back? For everything comes from him and exists by his power and is intended for his glory. All glory to him forever! Amen.
Freedom from fear is not found in a person, place, or possessions. It is found in God alone. Fear is driven away when we understand the magnitude of God. Included in this passage are seven truths about God’s greatness.
- God is beyond humanity’s full discovery. On our best day, with our clearest thinking, we will never be able to fully ascertain “how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge.”
- God’s ways are beyond humanity’s comprehension. There is no possible way our finite minds can grasp the infinite Creator.
- God is beyond the need for anyone’s counsel. God does not need our advice on how to run the universe.
- God is not indebted to us. No human has offered anything to God that he needs to repay.
- God is the first cause. He is the source from which all things come.
- God is the efficient cause. He is the agent through which all things exist.
- God is the final cause. To him, all things return and await his judgment.
When we begin to understand the enormity of God, the One we know personally through Jesus, there is no room for fear.
Father, help our understanding of your person and fill our hearts with your peace. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
